The picker would wear a special corn hook that would help pick clean and picking clean was preferred. As for shelling the corn, husks made no difference to mechanical shellers as they shelled the corn from the cob and separated corn from cobs and husks. Hand shellers required clean corn. As for grinding, hammer mills would grind cobs and husks.

Belt drive hammer mills are cheap and most have gone to scrap. For 100 I would sell A Letz burr mill with PTO drive and an auger to carry the groubd feed away to a wagon or a bin. It is factory made with two 15 inch tires. It is rusty because previous owner let it set out.

The pulley on the hammer mill had a slight crown in the middle. The tractor was about 20 feet from the hammer mill, making the belt about 40 foot long. It was easy to set up and stayed on real well. You'll need to do some mather to figure out how fast turns the shaft on the hammermill. Will depend on the pulley size. I'd say 540 will be way too slow, and 1000 would also be some too slow.

05:19:59 Report to Moderator I have question about grinding feed with a hammer mill. I have a very small operation and I still grind my steer feed with a belt driven hammer mill and an "M". It seems I need to keep the belt fairly tight in order to grind feed or else the belt seems to slip if I allow too much corn to enter the mill.

My John Deere 10A hammermill is rated to turn at 3200 RPM. I would think that directly connecting the hammermill to the PTO shaft would be too slow. ... I have ground tons and tons of ear corn in a John Deere hammer mill for dairy cows. I also have dads Gehl hammer mill that has a stalk and hay chopper that really works well for grinding roughage for beef cattle. The hammer mill was not run at PTO speed but always with the 8N at full throttle. Still remember the sound of the tractor and the noise of the hammer mill. The hammer mill lost a hammer one day due to the unbalance it dang near tore loose from the floor. Nearly the entire barn was shaking until dad got the whole mess shut down.
