the barley crusher has a 5lb hopper on it that I'm guessing governs the rate at which barley actually reaches the mill. I've been using the same drill at the fastest speed of the lower setting. in other words the drill has 60 settings, 30 speeds per gear?. I usually put the 4 or 5 lbs in the hopper before turning on the mill.

Profile view One of the nice things about the Captain Crush are the easy adjustment knobs. You can change settings quickly and without tools. So, it's turned out to be more of a monster than I intended, but in the end it's all good. I'll post pics as soon as I get back. Tonight I took it apart the second time during that period because the non driven roller started slipping. It's been close to zero here, which doesn't help. ... They label the mill as the "Northern Brewer Barley Crusher" mill. Interesting to know if Northern bought out Barley Crusher. I doubt it with the other mils NB has and I would bet BC ...

I think the first roller crushes at about .70 and the second at .39 or whatever. It's basically like a double pass thru the mill at once. I have heard that it negates the benefits of conditioning, too. Nope, conditioning still makes a big difference for a 3 roller mill. I actually still double crush mine with a 3 roller mill.

Go with the MM. You won't regret it. I bought the basic " 2roller mill with 1/2" shaft (to attach a pulley wheel). Damn thing's built like a tank and it chews through everything like the woodchipper in Fargo. And if you're considering the Barley Crusher, you might want to have a look at this thread.

Barley Crushers (also representative of most "cheap" mills) work well for what they are but the knurl on the rollers tends to wear faster (think 10's maybe 100's of batches) and the adjustment mechanism is a little more crude.

UPDATE I got my mill replaced by sending it back to Barley Crusher. They were slow to respond, but very helpful once I talked to them. I hooked the new mill up and I am having the same issues. I am pretty frustrated. The idle roller still will not turn properly. The only other thing I can think of is that it may be an alignment issue.

Valley Malt has a barley CSA. It's 200/share and that includes 100 lbs base malt (2row or pilsner) and 30 lbs specialty over the course of a year. I think the Barley Crusher Grain Mill is still the best bang for the buck at, well at Northern Brewer anyways, about 10 bucks more than when I bought mine 2 years ago come July. It comes with everything pictured, unlike the expensive mills where everything comes separately. Here it is sittin atop my 5G Lowe's bucket, which seems to fit the base tighter than the orange Home Depot bucket.

What you do is reassemble the mill with the driven roller on the other side I recall it's stock on the left and so you flip the end pieces over and move the drive roller to the right side, so you'll be driving it with the drill in reverse. ... It will adjust from .0025 to .090 thousandths and a barley crusher is .015 to .070 thousandths. Looking at it I don't think I will be doing whole corn with it.
