Right now, your RPM is just slightly under the speed where the media won't do any work. The optimum speed for your jar to turn is around 90 RPM like Frozentech said.

so basically the balls in the ball mill cause a lot of friction and that turns into heat which then ignites the mangesium powder. now what if you place your ball mill in a ice bath. no jk. but the belt sander doesnt even sound like that bad of an idea. i was planning to use a drone motor and attach like some kind of sandpaper to it. and then hold the magnesium in place with some metal.

Shop grade BBQ charcoal, is really slow, and can be only used for stars like C6, C8, and TT. Also it can be used for 6/3/1 rocket fuel, but might require serious ballmilling. BP with sulfur is much faster than sulfurless black powder, so getting sulfur would be best. Ballmill it for long enough (depends on the mill), then granulate it.

Where as a ball mill is going to be pounding the ingredients into eachother (others have obviously said). I think it would be a wonderful precursor to a mill, and could actually benefit a ball mill. I would love to see how a mill using 1/4" or 1/8" media would compare to speed/product compared to the traditional 1/2" and 3/4" traditional media.
