If it helps for comparison dad ran a Deere #10 hammermill that had 10 inch wide screens with a 51 A Deere and the tractor had maybe a 50% load on it. The hammer mill has to be up to speed, I think the Deere mill's ideal speed was 3500 RPM's.

You need a endless rubber belt for the hammer mill. And if you can find a good one (questionable) used it will be over a hundred dollars. Also a Hammer mill belt should be longer than a stationary saw belt and the 3 point saw the belt is about 9', front tractor mount saw about 20' all depending on tractor and saw model.

We had hammer mills for a number of years to grind feed for our dairy herd. Used Hs M and a 460. You want to check what rpm is required for the hammermill by either the data plate or instruction book. Pulley size will regulate the cylinder speed and you want to run your tractor at full throttle for power.

If the mill is being constantly fed and grinding is nonstop, the grinding load would of course, remain high. For a layman like me, again referring to the owners manual/pamphlet, the manufacturer recommended a 10 HP electric or 30 HP tractor to power this 8" mill. I can only assume their conclusions were based on both math/science and experience.

The pulley on the hammer mill had a slight crown in the middle. The tractor was about 20 feet from the hammer mill, making the belt about 40 foot long. It was easy to set up and stayed on real well. You have to power them up gradually, (let the clutch out slowly) or they stretch and jump off the pulleys.

The mill was powered by my W4 McCormack IH tractors belt pulley. So my mill ran by a flat belt, not pto. And it took about all the power my W4 had.
